Academics
The GTUC programme in Informatics is a new departure in education for the African environment. The programme focuses on the application of Information Science-the new information and communication technologies-to the challenges confronting rural, urban, and small and medium scale enterprises. The problems that is addressed include: rural economic development; urban economic development; the expansion and improvement of small and medium scale enterprises; educating and supporting women entrepreneurs; providing market information and other supporting services to the agricultural sector; and supporting businesses and industries as they transition to ICT.
Given this commitment, the first departure from traditional educational practice is that the Informatics programme will itself be a demonstration of the power of the new communication technologies to change the way work is done.
The curriculum of the Informatics programme has three main clusters of instruction and experience. One cluster is the Information Technology cluster. This strand of the curriculum includes the basic science and math and the foundational and advanced courses in Information Technology needed by all students. The second cluster is devoted to the Applied Social Sciences, including human and organizational development. There is a substantial component of coursework on "social entrepreneuring": creating change in existing enterprise and starting new ones appropriate for the African condition.
The third strand of the programme focuses on Experiential and Service Programmes. All students are required to become actively engaged in one of the organizational areas-a rural or urban development project, a microenterprise project, etc. Students can be setting up a computer lab in a school in Kumasi or working with a women's cooperative in Tamale and be in touch with faculty for advice, as well as connecting the work of the formal courses that they continue to take via computer with the field work they are doing.
